DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

The Department of Psychology was established in 1990 along with a number of Human Sciences Department in the Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. The Department offers a four-year program of studies leading top Bachelor of Human Sciences with Honors in Psychology, and a Masters program which began in September 1996.

FUNCTIONS AND FACILITIES

The Department of Psychology undertakes various activities such as teaching, research, continuing education, consultancies and psychological services including counseling. The department also offers postgraduate programs in Counseling & Clinical Psychology and in Industrial & Organizational Psychology.

The Department of Psychology has the following facilities for students and faculty:

1. A psychology laboratory for experimental research in psycho-physiology , learning and perception.

2. A psychology laboratory for psychodiagnostic and clinical assessment.

3. A center or psychological services, which includes counseling and psychotherapy.

4. A computer lab for administration, research and experimental work and quantitative analysis.

B.H.Sc. (Hons) PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM

A. Major in Psychology

In order to obtain a Bachelor of Human Science degree from the Department of Psychology students must complete no less than 128 credit hours (130 for Malaysian students) as follows:

1.COURSES IN MAJOR:

A minimum of 54 credit hours in psychology.

2. COURSES IN MINOR:

Students majoring in psychology must minor in Islamic Revealed Knowledge and heritage by taking a minimum of 27 credit hours in the field of Revealed Knowledge and Heritage.

3. KULLIYAH REQUIREMENTS:

As Kulliyah requirement students must study all 6 introductory courses in human sciences. Introduction to Psychology is considered part of the major courses. The 5 other courses constitute 15 credit hours.

4.LANGUAGES:

Students must be proficient in English and Arabic. Foreign students should have a working knowledge of Bahasa Malaysia, while Malaysian students are expected to enhance proficiency in this language. The Malaysian students are required to take a minimum of 10 credit hours in language courses (Bahasa Malysia-2 cr hr, English-8 cr hr). Foreign students are required to take a minimum of 8 cr hr of Advanced English. They are also required to take two courses in Bahasa Malaysia, which do not carry any credit. All students must take courses in Arabic language which are no credited.

5. SUPPORTING COURSES:

A minimum of 12 credit hours in support of the major is to be selected with the help of the academic advisor from the list of courses specified by the department.

5. ELECTIVE COURSES:

A minimum of 12 credit hours which a students is free to select as elective courses according to his/her own choice in consultation with the Academic Advisor. However, a student may select these from the list of courses approved by the department.

B. MINOR COURSES

Psychology majors must complete at least 27 credit hours of courses from the Department of Revealed Knowledge and heritage. Students are advised to take most of these courses in Arabic in order to complete the University requirement. The University requirement is that every student has to complete 20%-40% of his total credit hours in courses taught in Arabic Language. This is also advisable if the students intends to do double major.

HONORS LIST

During the course, a student who achieves a CGPA of 3.5 or above will be placed in the Dean's List of honor and achieving a CGPA of 3.7 or above will be placed in the Rector's Honor List, provided that his/her load is not less than 15 credit hours in the previous semester.

DOUBLE MAJOR

A psychology major student who has succesfully completed a Bachelor of Human Science is elligible to get another degree in his minor field of study, if he/she studies further for another academic year and fulfills all the requirements of a regular undergraduate degree program.

A student of IRKH minoring in Psychology may also major in Psychology provided he completes the requirements of the department. This would usually require one additional year of study.

B. MINOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

All IRKH majors who intend to minor in Psychology are required to take 27 credit hours in the Department of Psychology. The following four courses (3 cr hr each) are compolsory:
